YP Engage with United Way Emerging Leaders, ALICE Report

Eugene YP is excited to team again with the United Way Emerging Leaders, to bring you a lunch and learn on the ALICE report.

Our speakers joining us will be Eugene City Manager Jon Ruiz, and Alma Fumiko Hesus from the United Way of Lane County. Join us as we learn more about what the ALICE report is and what that data exactly means, we will have a presentation followed by a Q&A with our speakers.

    • The ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) project is a collaboration between 18 different states, and is a report done through United Way. ALICE families can’t always pay bills, have little in savings and are forced to make hard decisions like deciding between quality childcare and paying rent. Emergencies (car repair or medical issue) could push cash-strapped ALICE families over the edge and potentially pushing them into homelessness – in fact, here in lane county we have 130 newly homeless people every MONTH. With housing costs so high, food budgets end up being cut down in order to pay for rent and other necessary bills – leaving many households relying on food banks locally.

  • So why does this matter locally? 44% of households in Lane County are either ALICE families or living in poverty. 18% are living in poverty and the other 26% are ALICE – working hard but still can’t afford basic needs.
